Ever wondered why your dog howls or if they can dream? We all have random questions popping in our heads when observing our four-legged friends, that’s why we thought we would save you some time doing research and have combined in the article the most frequently asked questions when it comes to our dogs.

WHY IS YOUR DOG’S NOSE DRY/WET?

Some of the questions that pop out the most on Google are about our dogs’ noses. Whether they are wet or dry, we can’t help but be curious or worried about them. The reason is quite interesting. Their noses produce a very thin layer of moisture which helps them capture scent particles. They often lick their nose to taste the absorbed scents. Their wet nose also acts like a regulator of their body temperature.

So if your dog’s nose is dry, different things could be the reason: dehydration, a warm environment, the time of the day, or even after a nap, because they won’t be licking their nose while sleeping. It could also be a sign of a health issue like sunburn or severe dehydration. Remember to check with your vet if you are worried!

WHY DOES YOUR DOG STARE AT YOU?

LOVE! No kidding, it’s all about love. If you’ve ever stared at your dog just because you’re fond of them, then so can they! Dogs like to stare at their owners to show them their affection. And the poetic thing is that if you stare back at them, their body will release oxytocin (the love hormone), which will strengthen feelings of trust and love.

WHY DO DOGS EAT GRASS?

While there is no danger in your dog eating non-treated grass in small quantities, the reasons behind that habit vary. It could be because of an upset stomach, or because their regular diet doesn’t include vital nutrients. You should maybe consider reviewing your dog’s diet with your vet.

WHY DO DOGS EAT POOP?

Now to us humans, this feels completely disgusting, but it’s quite normal for our pets. This type of behaviour is observed in around 25% of dogs. The different reasons behind this are that it could be a behaviour they picked up from their mother as a puppy, they’re looking for essential nutrients they’re lacking in their regular diet, or they’re not eating enough. It could also be stress or boredom.

WHY DO DOGS HOWL?

The obvious answer which comes to mind is ancestry. After all, dogs do descend from wolves, so it’s only a natural thing for the to do. It’s formerly a way for them to communicate with their peers, however, it’s also a means to express an illness, an injury or separation anxiety. If the howling becomes too frequent, make sure to check with your vet about what could be the cause, or reach out to a behaviour specialist who’ll help you fix your dog’s separation anxiety.

WHY DO DOGS CHASE THEIR TAILS?

Isn’t it funny to watch your dog chase their tail? While it is funny, it’s also very intriguing to understand why they do so. If your dog is still a puppy or in their early years, it’s completely normal and natural. It’s a kind of game they like to play when they’re bored or in need of attention. Kind of like an only child playing on their own!

However, if you catch your adult dog chasing their tail, it might be problematic, as it could be a sign of fleas or worms. Again, reach out to your vet for more advice.

CAN DOGS DREAM?

Yes, they can! Just like us, dogs follow the same sleep cycle: REM. So around after 20 minutes, if you notice your dog twitching, it’s because they’ve started dreaming. Now the real mystery is to know what they dream about. While there is no scientific proof, it is theorised that they dream about everyday activities like chasing squirrels or playing with their owners.
