DIY Elegant Toys For Cats and Dogs

by Héloïse Ferrie

We love to spoil our four legged best friends with toys as if they were are children, but let’s face it, pet toys usually are made for practicality and not aesthetics, which often means we’ll end up with neon coloured chewy toys that look odd in our interiors. Now let’s be honest, of course the look of their toys isn’t our priority as long as our pets enjoy them, but wouldn’t it be nice for once to enjoy seeing one of them on the floor, or not rushing to hide them when we have guests around?

We often see pet insurance as an extra spending, which might not be useful if our pets are healthy, let us show you why you should insure your pet.

We’ve selected two do it yourself toy projects for your cats and dogs that we’re sure you’ll have as much fun making them as our animals will do playing with them.

Worry not, you don’t require much material besides what you already have at home!

Elegant crunchy toy for your dog

You’ll need:

  • Fabric from an old shirt, pillow case or blanket you’re fond of but don’t get to use anymore
  • A bit of filling from an old cushion
  • A plastic bag (you know, the ones we get when we end buying more than expected in the supermarket and pile up with the others once we’re and forget about them forever?)
  • Thread and needles
  • The pattern that you can find here

  1. Print the pattern, and cut out each piece and attach pieces with tape where indicated.
  2. From your fabric, cut out one of each pattern piece, so three total.
  3. Fold the straight edge of each back piece over 2cm, pin, and sew to create a hem.
  4. Layer the back pieces over each other so that the hems overlap.  Pin along the outside edge where the hems overlap to create a complete bone shape with a slit opening. Sew the edges and leave the slit opening.
  5. Turn the fabric inside out through the opening.
  6. Clip the round edges of your bone and turn your project right side out.
  7. Start filling the ends of the bones with a bit of filling through the opening to give them shape, then add a bit in the centre before putting the plastic bag. Why a plastic bag? Because dogs love chewy, noisy toys!
  8. Give it to your dog to enjoy!
